The University of London was founded in 1836 and is one of Europe's pre-eminent universities, equal to Oxford and Cambridge in the UK. It is a federation of 18 distinct, separate and, in many cases, multi-faculty Colleges, together with 11 specialist Institutes and an External Programme which is the University's principal distance learning provider.

The University offers Undergraduate courses by distance learning in the following subjects: Accounting, Banking and Finance, Business, Business Administration, Computing and Information Systems, Classical Studies, Development and economics, Economics, Economic and Management, Languages, History, Information Systems and Management, Law with Accounting, Law with Management, Laws, Management with Law, Philosophy, Politics and International Relations, Sociology and Theology.

At this level the range of material and level of support provided to students varies dependent on the specific qualification. In the majority of undergraduate degrees students receive everything they need in order to complete their study as an introductory package of study materials. This may include subject guide, subject introduction for each subject studied, relevant Regulations and Student Handbook, Resource Guide, past examination papers and examiners reports. However, students are required to purchase their own text books and any tutorial support they may think necessary. New technology provides additional resource support through the new Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) and through it access to the University of London Library. Students are also encouraged to network with each other.
